In class you’ll learn about the history of indigo as a dye and how it’s been used around the world. We’ll talk about the different kinds of indigo and methods for dyeing. We will use several kinds of indigo vats and you will learn how you can make a small one for home use. You’ll explore Japanese techniques for making pattern and marks by folding and clamping (itajime) and wrapping (arashi) techniques and other methods. Your takeaway pieces will include two scarves and you’ll have plenty of fabric for practice. The class kit includes two scarves, a yard of cotton fabric (for a bandana or cushion cover), and sampling fabrics as well as use of several; indigo vats, gloves, notes, a list of resources and extensive use of shibori tools. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dye on (dyeing with indigo is a glorious messy process!) The cost of the class includes all materials and lunch.
